AY LELUM F/W 2020

On Saturday, September 12, Ay Lelum The Good House of Design, launched their collection Ay Lelum F/W 2020 online. Since the COVID-19 epidemic hit in March, our worlds have been turned upside down. Last spring I had booked my week for Vancouver Fashion Week and also expected seeing Ay Lelum launch this collection at Indigenous Fashion Week Toronto themed Women as Water carriers. However, things changed quickly and events were canceled. Many businesses including fashion labels are struggling with this new reality. One of the main questions for the fashion industry is how do we get our collections seen without traditional showcases and fashion shows.

The Ay Lelum Good House of Design fashion shows I have experienced are just that, an experience. Using many creative elements, the label is always able to immerse the viewer in their world of Indigenous culture. Again they have risen to the challenge presented by the pandemic and produced an exciting video showcasing their original music and amazing fashion.

“Yuxwule’ Sul’sul’tun~Eagle Spindle Whorl Collection ” is inspired by the strength of women. Women are the backbone of Ay Lelum. This label is designed by two sisters working with their family collective. Aunalee and Sophia embody the strength and power of women. They focus on Coast Salish culture. By featuring Spindle Whorls as a representation of the women behind the Spindle Whorl, as universal mothers, life-givers, water carriers, and weavers of life. It is these strengths that have been drawn on to battle the many recent adversities and give this collection life.

“When the pandemic hit and every show we were scheduled for was systematically cancelled, we thought this collection would not see the light of day. However, the collection was designed and taken to market, the call was made to the Ancestors and prayers were recorded–these ancient stories and songs were awakened. It became essential to share this collection at this global time of uncertainty and that collectively we celebrate art, history and culture together. Thankfully, it was with the support of our many networks, especially NEDC, that we were able to make this collection a reality.” says Aunalee Boyd-Good, Director Designer and Sister of Ay Lelum.

While this pandemic has changed my usual seat , I am still watching and reviewing the collections of local and international designers. One such label is Ay Lelum The Good House of Design. Certainly, the experience of watching  fashion shows help in creating interest among the public to spread awareness about new arrivals in design and style. The video launch of  “Yuxwule’ Sul’sul’tun~Eagle Spindle Whorl Collection” shows a collection that is worthy of such interest.

Indeed a great fashion collection has a theme, tells a story, and fulfills a desire for something new and exciting. Ay Lelum has produced a great collection. The theme is strength and power and that is told through the story of the Supernatural Eagle. These Good family stories are carved on Spindle Whorls, tools traditionally used by women to spin and weave sacred Coast Salish wool that is woven into textiles, and these designs are featured in the garments with a blend of modern techniques and traditional art.

Whatever the special occasion from red carpet, wedding, or graduation, making a statement is what occasion dressing is all about. Perhaps what is most exciting about Ay Lelum is they are designing clothing that puts their culture front and center. Tough as times are Ay Lelum speaks to an idea of hope. Sisters Aunalee and Sophia told me the following; “According to the teachings of our Father William Good, when the world was in darkness, the Creator answered the people’s prayers and sent the Supernatural Eagle to bring the sunlight to the people. This dynamic Fall Winter 2020 collection chronicles this journey as the Supernatural Eagle travels the galaxy and brings the sunlight to the world, ultimately bringing us hope.”

The collection uses practical eco-friendly fabrics with rich colors and bold prints. A large variety of dresses, ponchos, and jackets make up Ay Lelum F/W 2020. The collection presents a series of jackets that are a new and exciting addition to Ay Lelum. With exciting fashion options for both women and men, Ay Lelum is a label that produces wearable art.
