CORDUROY ; WEAR IT THIS FALL
A true corduroy trend has not happened since the seventies .Corduroy appears to be making a huge comeback this fall. Since many of you can’t remember the 70’s , let me tell you there was a lot of corduroy. While I was a child, I do distinctly recall the brown and beige corduroy that was everywhere . Moreover corduroy had a huge impact on my own fashion story. No doubt I was a fashionista by a very young age. Therefore I remember times and events in my life by the clothes I wore.
Above all else I can recall a specific pair of pants that were made from wide wale corduroy. In fact these pants were beige of all colors and had patch pockets in a brown color . While I can’t recall the exact year , I do recollect that I was around 8 years old and wore these pants with great pride to my birthday dinner. All things considered , the pants in question were a beloved article of clothing.I loved these pants and I loved the plush feel of the fabric. The importance here is that the pants were corduroy only because they didn’t come in velvet. Hence corduroy is really the economic version of velvet , and this fall we see both fabrics having a huge impact.
CORDUROY-HOW TO WEAR FALLS HOTTEST TREND-THE FABRIC
Corduroy is a textile with a distinct pattern, a “cord” or wale. Modern corduroy is most commonly composed of tufted cords, sometimes exhibiting a channel (bare to the base fabric) between the tufts. Corduroy is, in essence, a ridged form of velvet
The fabric looks as if it is made from multiple cords laid parallel to each other and then stitched together. The word corduroy is from cord and duroy, a coarse woollen cloth made in England in the 18th century. The interpretation of the word as corde du roi (from French, the cord of the King) is from folk lore.
As a fabric corduroy is considered a durable cloth. Therefore corduroy is found in the construction of pants, jackets and shirts. The width of the cord is commonly referred to as the size of the “wale” (i.e. the number of ridges per inch). The lower the “wale” number, the thicker the width of the wale (e.g., 4-wale is much thicker than 11-wale). Corduroy’s wale count per inch can vary from 1.5 to 21, although the traditional standard falls somewhere between 10 and 12. Wide wale is more commonly used in trousers and furniture upholstery (primarily couches); medium, narrow, and fine wale fabrics are usually found in garments worn above the waist.
CORDUROY; HOW TO WEAR FALL’S HOTTEST TREND-A/W 2017
Darlings you may guess that “Corduroy; how to wear fall’s hottest trend ” is a post dealing with how to wear my old corduroy from the 70’s. However this could not be further from the truth. Therefore if you are not a fan of this old style fabric you may want to give it a second look.
While corduroy has not been seen on the runway for a long time it sure made a statement for this fall. First lets state what is obvious about this fabric, it is not going to appear as the latest cocktail dress. Similarly this is not an evening fabric you’ll be going dancing in any time soon. In my opinion corduroy is the ultimate day-time fabric. Therefore it plays right into street style .
Since street style is really a ground up movement , the use of this retro fabric plays right into this style. This fall I was excited to see the inventive uses of this textile. Strangely enough we saw corduroy appear in the often expected color palette of autumnal tones .However many of the designers engaged with this durable , sturdy fabric to create some fabulous fashion.

Marc Jacobs was daring when he fit Ms. Jenner into second skin, scarlet red corduroy, with matching trimmed jacket. Next I wasn’t shocked to see the more traditional use at Kenzo . Where they produced a suit. Although invention lead to the treatment of the fabric where a pattern was traced on the sleeves and legs. Mulberry showed a traditional use in a floor length corduroy maxi skirt. Prada used corduroy to give street-style pants a unique look . In the same way a personal favorite was Y/Project which showed golden trousers with a ruffled cuff.
