GINGHAM FOR SPRING & SUMMER
HELLO DARLINGS! It’s gingham time . Its May already I can’t believe it . May Day the first of May has come and gone. Did you know that May Day was originally a spring festival and then in the 19th century became a day for International workers. Many of those workers worked in the textile industry making fabric . I know that many of my fore fathers in the North of England, worked in those fabric mills. No doubt gingham was one of those fabrics they produced. Gingham is an old fabric that has a checkered past.
GINGHAM EVERYWHERE
By and large gingham is a very common and popular fabric. Since gingham was a very inexpensive fabric at the turn of the century it was used much like muslin. Therefore dressmakers and tailors would use gingham to make an inexpensive fitting garment prior to making the clothing in fashion fabric.
On the other hand ,Judy Garland wore gingham as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz . Gingham was used as a household fabric in the 1940’s ,50’s. and 60’s. Therefore many of us have seen gingham table cloths , picnic cloths and curtains. Similarily the popularity of this fabric grew in the 1950’s and became very trendy as a shirt fabric. In the meantime in 1959 Brigitte Bardot shocked the fashion world and wore a pink gingham dress for her wedding . Ultimately this event caused a rush on this fabric in France and the fabric became hard to find. Consequently gingham earned a place in the fashion world. Therefore we have seen gingham used in many seasons and collections. In the same way it comes as no surprise to see this bright checked fabric come to the forefront on the runway
GINGHAM FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2017
Of course Brigitte Bardot was ahead of her time when she opted to wear a pink gingham dress to wed actor Jacques Charrier in the summer of 1959. However gingham is still known mostly for the Dorothy-association and its place at a picnic. Therefore girls whether you’re starring in the remake of the Beverly Hillbillies or as Mary Ann in the touring company of Gilligans Island this checked print is back in a big way.
