WHAT IS GLOBAL FASHION COLLECTIVE ?
GLOBAL FASHION COLLECTIVE NYFW S/S 2024. I’m excited to introduce many of you to Global Fashion Collective. Certainly, many of you who are familiar with Vancouver Fashion Week may have heard of Global Fashion Collective. However talking to my Vancouver fashion industry friends and other fashion lovers, many know little or nothing about it. Therefore, let me fill you in on this great expansion of Vancouver Fashion Week.
Global Fashion Collective is an expansion of Vancouver Fashion Week which provides a platform for emerging and established designers to showcase their recent creations. Launched in October 2017, the collective has been producing exclusive runway showcases in diverse fashion capitals around the world. GFC aims to help designers increase their global brand presence, increasing their exposure internationally and opening up new markets.
GLOBAL FASHION COLLECTIVE
NYFW S/S 2024
For NYFW S/S 2024 Global Fashion Collective presented two days of fashion shows consisting of 17 designers. While attending fashion shows live is always my preference it is not always possible, if the pandemic did one good thing for us fashion lovers and writers it made video runway shows necessary and accessible. In fact all fashion journalists sometime rely on taped shows to write reviews. All Global Fashion Collective shows took place at one venue the Clinton Mercantile, I watched them all from the comfort of my easy chair. Since I can’t cover all 17 designers I have chosen a cross section of four designers to give you an overall feel.
HYPER COUTURE
Global Fashion Collective- NYFW S/S 2024
The opening show from Global Fashion Collective was Hyper Couture designed by SATOSHI SHINADA, also known as Christian Gail. Shinada went to school in NYC and previously worked for Donna Karan.
The label Hyper Couture is inspired by a combination of a walk around a department store and an amusement park. The clothes that came down the runway were an artistic approach to streetwear. Hand-painted slogans decorated many of the pieces, made from denim and jersey. The color palette highlighted hot pink, teal, and yellow. Adding variety to the collection were well-tailored jackets and classic-cut sundresses. The standout pieces were a pair of denim wedding attire splattered with paint, focusing on the fun and energy this collection exudes.
Justin Jacob Louis
Global Fashion Collective- NYFW S/S 2024
Justin Jacob Louis is a fashion designer from the Samson Cree Nation and was born and raised in Nipisihkopahk (Samson Reserve) on Treaty 6 Territory in Alberta, Canada. He is the Founder and Creative Director of acclaimed Indigenous streetwear label SECTION 35, which was founded in 2014 in Vancouver, Canada. Justin Jacob Louis presents for the first time at NYFW under his new eponymous label offering a refined and sophisticated selection.
Indigenous dancers, dressed in celebratory regalia, opened the show for Justin Jacob Louis. The collection that came down the runway was inspired by the old photos of the Samson Cree Nation. Justin Jacob Louis’s work blends the past with the present, and the inspiration that comes from the juxtaposition of the two. Sweaters and hoodies have subtle images of the landscape, a tipi appears against a background of the horizon on a hoodie. Tailored outerwear is the backbone of the collection. A shawl-collared overcoat in dove grey shows that this label produces luxury garments.
PATRYCJA PLESIAK
Global Fashion Collective- NYFW S/S 2024
Patrycja Plesiak presented an artistic collection that is the symbiosis of fashion and technology. The designer created many of her textiles, incorporating texture, finish, and transparency. Evening gowns and luxurious trouser sets are presented in an array of silhouettes. The use of technology included glowing LEDs and electronic components used in the garments and accessories. This future-looking collection embodied exciting uses of mechanization and technical knowledge. I am excited to see more from this designer who challenges the existing boundaries of fashion.
EVARO ITALIA
Global Fashion Collective- NYFW S/S 2024
Eva Rorandelli is an Italian American artist, fashion designer, and the founder of Evaro Italia. A high-end Italian evening wear brand. Evaro Italia was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Florence, Italy.
Certainly, what often sets Italian fashion design apart is it’s luxury fabrics and superior craftsmanship. While EVARO ITALIA didn’t reinvent the wheel as far as avant garde design goes, neither did it intend to. In fact, this brand is a celebration of those luxury fabrics, superior craftsmanship, and classic tasteful design. Furthermore, often at fashion weeks we are so geared up to see the latest thing that we miss great classic design. In this case, I didn’t miss the sophisticated, elegant design of EVARO ITALIA .
A personal favorite EVARO ITALIA this time took us on a journey through Italy. The collection opened with some classic day looks including the use of leather in a pink jacket paired with blossomy trousers . Delicate floral dresses were shown in silhouettes reminiscent of a 1930’s garden party. Evening gowns in sheer lace and rich sumptuous satin are some the closest frocks to Haute Couture that NYFW has to offer. With this collection Eva Rorandelli showed her skill and impeccable taste.
