MY FASHION CHOICES FROM
THE GOLDEN GLOBES
This is my first post of 2020 and my fashion choices from The Golden Globes are always fun to write. While we may not be strutting down this particular Red Carpet, being up on what’s hot can serve us all well. Certainly, all the critics sharpen their claws to tear up the Red Carpet with witty and biting prose. I, however, find less joy in picking apart the gowns of celebrities and more in showing the work of the best designers. While you can see these gowns on the runways, these dresses were designed with an occasion like this in mind. Where else will we see these creations come to life?
In the long tradition of awards shows, these stars took to the red carpet as if they lived there. The biggest trend that I noticed and loved was huge, puffy and detailed sleeves. Certainly, this trend was predicted, however, who knew how huge it would be. While color trends were less noticeable this year, red won the award. A return to the great classics caught my eye. Gowns reminiscent of the ball gowns of the 1950’s, larger than life floating down the red carpet. There was also sleek black. Not since Yves Saint Laurent put a woman in a tux, has black been more successfully presented.
The Golden Globes are the first of the award show season. I have always watched and commented on the great dresses of Hollywood and here are my fashion choices for 2020.
MY FASHION CHOICES
BEST CLASSIC DRESS
ANA DE ARMAS IN RALPH AND RUSSO
Darlings, I’m a sucker for a classic beautiful gown. Pictured is a gown with a full skirt and a strapless bodice, the 1950’s silhouette is a go-to for a glamorous look. What makes this style so popular is it is simple and sophisticated. This dress in midnight blue sequin suits Ana de Armas, with her pale complexion and simple styling. When choosing an evening gown select one with classic lines giving your dress a longer life.
MY FASHION CHOICES
FABULOUS SLEEVES
CATE BLANCHETT IN MARY KATRANTZOU
Certainly, I would probably not appreciate this dress as much on anybody else. However, Cate Blanchett is a major fashionista with style credits and fashion triumphs too many to mention. When looking at these sleeves they make a statement. The shell sleeves set the tone for this creative and unique design.
Puffy, over-sized sleeves take me back to the days of Dynasty and disco. Certainly, a throw back to the 1980’s is a live and well, however these sleeves are unique enough to welcome the new decade. In a design a featured element often gives the look it’s flare and style. In the three photo’s here, the sleeves are the central feature of the gowns.
MY FASHION CHOICES
THE WOMEN’S TUX
PHOEBE WALLER BRIDGE IN RALPH RUSSO
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the star of the British show Flea Bag, if you haven’t seen this show do yourself a favor it is funny and topical. The tux look is a serious style statement when worn by a woman, is both streamlined lined and has major sex appeal. In this case, this very British tweed number is a scene-stealer.
MY FASHION CHOICES
RED IS HOT
If you are one of those who follow color predictions, everyone at the Globes should have been wearing orange or peach. Well, I guess no one got that memo, because if I was seeing anything it was red. In fact, red is often a color used for evening wear. Frequently red is used to draw attention, think of that red light, the red carpet and a gorgeous red lip. In this case, red gives the stars that added standout among the throngs.

My fashion choices from the Golden Globes is a chance to look and learn something about evening wear. While we might all dream of wearing high-end dresses from the great designers, you can find other options! With this in mind, I recommend searching out sales, sourcing custom dressmakers, buying vintage and visiting local designers. Moreover, if you want something unique smaller labels will often give you great style and reasonable pricing. In fact, I’m a champion of supporting local designers and smaller companies. Therefore, when considering your next evening wear purchase seek out the designers in your area.
WHAT’S HOT
Following the trend report in my head will certainly take you to strange great places. However, in this case, I’m onto something. I have been seeing a huge a lot of fringes around lately, one of the strongest hottest looks is fringed hair. Yes, the bang is HOT, especially if you bleach it out. Along the same theme, the 1970s inspired fringed jacket is HOT! Fashion often follows motifs, for example, fringes may appear in hair, footwear, and clothing at the same time.
Looking at the street style from NY fashion week, fringe is HOT for this fall winter. I can”t remember how many times fringe has come and gone. So if you’re a fashion hoarder you may have several versions of the fringed jacket lurking in the depths of your storage space. Usually l give a lot of trends a pass however this one is both fun and part of the western flare we’ve seen in the last few seasons. Certainly, the fringed jackets I’ve chosen come with a warning about how HOT you’ll be .
