POWER SUITS ARE HUGE FOR WOMEN THIS FALL

POWER SUIT'S FOR WOMEN

Power suits for women ,sounds like a strange mantra from the 1980's. Hence I think of Melanie Griffith in her "Working Girl " role with shoulder pads for days  Therefore once considered the female version of the men's suit. the so called power suit has a women's only verison .

However the power is different too, this is the power of life not just work. A huge outfit for this fall is the female power suits we are seeing on the runways. As a matter of fact the power suits I'm talking about have power on the red carpet.Furthermore they also have power on the street , and power in the work place. These suits aren't new ,women have enjoyed wearing them for decades. Maybe this time around they have more power.

POWER SUIT'S OF THE PAST

Women are wearing power suits today like a second skin . But this was not always true. Big fashion icon's of the past fought hard not just to wear suits, but to win power. Since dressing can give you certain freedoms and power , many women of the past fought to wear not suits and pants. The great actress Sarah Bernhardt scandalized Paris by wearing a customized trouser suit in the 1870's. Coco Chanel wore suits with long straight skirts in 1914.Furthermore in the 1930's women like Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich popularized wearing suits both on screen and off. In 1937 Amelia Earhart set off around the world in a tailored suit , necktie and loafers presenting an androgynous look.

POWER SUITS MOVE FORWARD

The 1950's saw women wearing pants in casual wear and not so much in suits . Therefore the next big movement was St. Laurent in 1966 when he created the women's tuxedo . The 1970's saw the huge movement of women into the workforce and with it they wore suits. Since women wanted to be taken seriously in business it was as though they emulated men's dressing . Meanwhile, on the other side of the coin were your Annie Hall's. Carefree women who fought society's gender ideals by wearing men's clothes in a flippant plain way.

The New Yorker observed, "The Annie Hall clothes are a show of confidence." In a time during which women weren't allowed into restaurants wearing trousers. A Manhattan restaurant La Côte Basque,  refused to let New York socialite Nan Kempner in wearing her Evening Pant Suit . It was a bold move to don some slacks. It was also the 1970's.

 POWER SUITS BECOME MODERN

By the 1980's  power dressing hit high speed . While in America Dynasty put linebacker shoulder pads on the map , a certain designer in Milan changed women's wear forever. Giorgio  Armani managed to completely revolutionize women's fashion. First he figured out ways to cut a masculine suit for a women's unmasculine form. Therefore for the first time the woman's tailored suit with trousers or skirt were given a much needed hit of seriousness.

Since the 1980's we have seen the power suit made feminine by the great Donna Karen and completely retired in the 2000's. Therefore today most anything goes in the office the hard uniform dressing has passed away .However  this fall we see a big move back to the power suit.

POWER SUITS FALL 2017

Hot off the fall 2017 runway the power suit trend is quickly emerging this season. In a time of political unrest designers are strongly vocalizing their support for female power through design. Taking a cue from Melanie Griffith’s character in “Working Girl” the power suit is feminine and fun.Gucci shows us romantic red ruffled siuts, while Altuzarra’s take on the power suit comes in bold stripes with fur-lined collars. Have fun, be bold, wear the lastest power suits by Victoria Beckham , and no frill power suits by Stella McCartney perhaps inspired by Hilary Rodham Clinton.
