While it’s not your usual night out, to strut around a lake in Central Park , we are talking about Ralph Lauren. Moreover your invitation would have you gorging on canape’s with the likes of Hillary Rodham Clinton and ex-con Martha Stewart. While across the tent it was like Madam Tussaud’s wax works of living American designers. Amid the seats in the front row sat Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera , Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors ,Tommy Hilfiger,John Varvatos, Jeffrey Banks, Thom Browne. In this case they came out for one thing to pay homage to the King of American Fashion.

Lauren’s 50th anniversary show,was always going to be big. This is the man who gave Americans a set of aesthetic aspirations that tapped into their 20th century hopes and ambitions . However it had unexpected heart as well, not least because all the celebrities, there had genuine connections with the label.

Of course I really was not surprised, to hear that Ralph Lauren ,(the company)was celebrating 50 years.  Since I some how can recall  Lauren always being there. Whether you love to play cowboys or lumberjacks this now historic brand has played a huge part in American fashion.

One sometimes wonders if the design studios at Ralph Lauren are hermetically sealed. Do the windows open? Can any fresh air get in? Are the windows so soundproof that they block out not just the noise of the city but the sounds of an ever-shifting culture? Although it has been said that the more things change the more things stay the same.

However when we look at Ralph it is no stretch that people love his fashion. His 50th anniversary tells the American tale. Since Mr Lauren has never focused his talents on creating clothes that are avant-garde ,too sexy or too cool he focused on a lifestyle.

First this lifestyle was about an almost fictional world of Polo ponies and Country Clubs. The traditonal , the classic the refined. Lauren’s work, is essentially the story of all the American things in our closets. These are the items that we think of as typically American. These pieces are the jeans and polo shirts, button-down Oxfords, crewneck sweaters, Western jackets and cowboy boots and flannel shirts. Certainly Lauren didn’t invent them. But he turned them into a way of dressing that defines what it is to be American. . He gave America a national uniform.

 Whether you love this brand or just like it , it is a remarkable feat for a company to celebrate 50 years. However it is even more amazing that a fashion company has this longevity with the same man on top. Since it’s conception fifty years ago the man at the top has stayed loyal to his American dream. Hence (with only several bumps in the road) America has stayed loyal to him. Lauren stands at the pinnacle of American Fashion. Calvin Klein sold his business years ago. Moreover Donna Karan has packed it in and her collection went the way of the dinosaurs by it’s new owners. While still others like Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass have passed on. Ralph Lauren has maintained a steady cross.

Since I was young I have been an occasional customer of Lauren. I never turned to this brand for great innovation . However when I needed a classic crew-neck sweater, a high quality Polo shirt or some great jeans I new I could turn to Ralph Lauren.
