THE EMMY AWARDS AMAZING FASHION PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON 1950’S

THE EMMY AWARDS 

Since Sunday night is a boring t.v. night I tuned into the Emmy Awards. While I may not be the person to ask about t.v. shows , I do know the Red Carpet. Moreover the Emmy Awards Red Carpet, has become much more like the Oscars ,  since the mega stars have flocked to t.v. Therefore the 69th Emmy Awards was an A list affair.

For this reason the Red Carpet saw stars like Nicole Kidman , Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Lang and Jane Fonda. No doubt the A list crowd brought out the big fashion names as well.  First and foremost we saw Tracy Ellis Ross in Chanel, Michelle Pfeiffer in Oscar de la Renta, and Zoe Kravitz in Dior.

While we all look at the Red carpet to see who wore what , and who wore what well, do we need another post about it? In my opinion we certainly do not . Hence was I going to write about this event or not , did I have anything of value to add ? Of course those of you who follow me know I love vintage , fashion history and great design. Therefore  I was perplexed could I contribute anything, or should I sit back and enjoy the show. At this point I decided on the latter.

While I settled in to enjoy the Red carpet a strong theme started to arise . In fact I then sat up and started rewinding the program. Since I  have trained myself to see  trends on the runways , I started to notice a strong trend on the Red carpet . Strangely enough on my re-watching I was seeing a strong trend to the silhouettes of the 1950's. I know had a handle to write my post!

THE EMMY AWARDS; 1950'S SILHOUETTES.

There are two main silhouettes in 50s fashion – the wasp waist with full skirt and the slim fitting pencil skirt. Both are iconic 50's looks. Moreover they are portrayed as either super sexy or fun and flirty – depending on how you wear them.

The beauty of the 1950s era is that there is a ‘look’ that will suit any body shape – the more womanly the better. For those of you who lack curves, these can be created easily with a bit of help from belts, foundation garments and plenty of net and padding!

Ultimately this fuller figured look is taking hold today. Therefore we don't have to look further than the runways using real people, curves and all . Many celebrities are now acclaimed for fuller figures and large buttocks. In addition the 1950's silhouette's are back. At this point let me prove my point.

EMMY AWARDS - NICOLE KIDMAN

Since I am looking for evidence of of the 1950's silhouette we need not look further than Nicole Kidman. Arguably this dress could have walked right out of the 1950's. Nicole chose this beautiful Calvin Klein by Appointment crimson pleated dress. Since we have a great comparison here the, full skirt , and the  petite waist create the same silhouette. EMMY AWARDS MILLIE BOBBY BROWN

While choosing the frocks for this post I was unaware that this dress and Nicole's dress were both by Calvin Klein by Appointment. Therefore both of these dresses belong to the same collection and speak to the same look. However this much more youthful dress has another element of 1950's dresses which is tulle. First the dress has the same silhouette but the gauzy tulle skirt gives it a fuller and very feminine look.

EMMY AWARDS ELIZABETH MOSS

Strangely enough I really wasn't looking for a story here, but the fashion similarities to the 1950's is glaring. Moreover Emmy Award winner Elizabeth Moss choose this Prabal Gurung satin strapless dress. Ultimately this dress is the closest to being a vintage dress. It looks like it came right out of the 1950's. This custom dress was created with what the designer called a hyper-feminine look . As in the story of the Hand Maiden's Tale women are fighting for their rights , much like today. Gurung opted to use a feminine design to drive home his point that embracing feminity can be empowering when it's done on a woman's own terms.

EMMY AWARDS THANDIE NEWTON

While I was by this point looking for that 1950's influence it wasn't hard to find. For this reason Thandie Newton really stood out in a gorgeous dusty pink gown by Jason Wu. Westworld star Thandie  dazzled the red carpet . The gown had a 1950's silhouette with a strapless bodice and full skirt.

EMMY AWARDS SOFIA VERGARA

While the main silhouette of the 1950's is a small waist and and big flare skirt one of the other looks that comes from the 50's is the mermaid . Of course the tight pencil skirt look is a big part of the 1950's and when adjusted for evening the mermaid became popular. No one can wear this better than Sofia Vergara because it is dependedant a full curvy figure.

Darlings this certainly was a fun post to put together and I hope you all enjoy it . I am a fashion historian and I love vintage and retro looks. Therefore it would take someone like me to identify this 1950's trend (vibe) .Furthermore I hope I've made my point .

During my research for this post I discovered this brand on Farfetch called Bambah . Strangely enough one of the lines from Bambah's description is; " This collection will delight the world's fashion crowds with it's throwback to 1950's fashion and the rise of the elegant lady." I'm always excited to discover exciting new brands.
