THE NIGHT OF A THOUSAND GOWNS
The Oscar night fashion show has begun. Hollywoods biggest night of the year, the Academy Awards. I have always been a huge fan of the Oscars. Since I was a child I loved Oscar night .First of all I am a big movie fan. I remember as a child and teenager I had an old television in my room and would sneak it on late at night. It was during these late night vigils that I became a starry eyed fan of the classic movie stars .
Stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Bette Davis strutted the screen in amazing creations by Dior, Givenchy and Edith Head. Furthermore it was these clothes and costumes that influenced me so much. As a result of these influences I would spend hours drawing dresses and gowns , much to my fathers dismay. I loved the feathers , sequins ,sparkles and jewels. Finally in addition there is no where that this glamour is more present than in Oscar night fashion.
There are now many award nights . While all of these events bring out the gowns and jewels nothing is bigger than the Oscars. Therefore Oscar night fashion is the biggest annual event for designers . While fashion weeks have the designers show cased for the media there is no bigger media event than the Academy Awards. The International audience for the Oscars is around 800 million, with 45 million in the United States. If a designer has a hit with their Oscar night fashion it can mean huge financial awards for their brand .Hence the red carpet has become about sales, branding and spin.
Oscar Night Fashion, What Was On the Red Carpet
While this may sound a little cynical I don't mean it that way.I love to see the best of the designers collcetions worn by actresses instead of models. Since these gowns are the best of the best it is always great to see them worn by real working actresses. Since I don't want to appear cynical I am not going to dwell too much on the worst looks of the night.I prefer to show case the best looks. Yet it is important for me to mention what looks did not work.
Oscar Night Fashion That Didn't Work
While the award season has many nights to strut your stuff the Oscars take the cake . Therefore it really doesn't matter wether you dropped big bucks on your dress , it either works or it doesn't. Oscar night fashion for 2017 was varied , few trends really arose but some dresses rose to the top of my worst looks list.
My number one worst look of the night is this Ellie Saab dress worn by Janelle Monae. I have seen some lists that like this dress I strongly disagree. This dress just shows a complete lack of taste , it is over the top. What the hell is going on here, the house of dreary days . Looks like Marie Antoinette is going to tinkerbells funeral . Yuk !
Actress Felicity Jones looked dull and sad in this ill fitting Dior dress. The dress was not at all flattering and gave poor Felicity a thick waist and a monotone look.
I was so dissapointed to find out this dress was by Zuhair Murad ,( a recent favorite of mine).Ginnifer Godwin was swallowed alive by this toxic red lace dress.
Actress Scarlet Johansson tops out my worst dressed list with this pink printed Alaia gown .This dress looks like somthing leftover from grandma's garage sale . Everything that could be wrong is the color is odd, the cut is unflattering and the belt who knows.
Oscar Night Fashion That Worked.
MY FAVORITE GOWNS AND HOW TO EMULATE THE LOOKS.
Oscar night fashion that works should never leave us wanting more. Therefore the glam and glitz were all left on the red carpet on Sunday night. A lot of work goes into getting those beautiful people onto that red carpet . While choosing a dress is one thing there's a lot more that goes into it. Hence the shoes, the hair the make-up, and the jewels create the look ,that's why so many stars hire stylists to put the whole look together
.I have chosen four looks that won on the red carpet. Since I can't choose them all I'd like to give a shout out to some that didn't make my top four. First of all I thought Octavia Spencer was stunning in her feathered silver Marchesa gown. Another cheer goes out to Kirten Dunst who shone in out in a classic vintage style black Dior gown. While many may disagree I loved the Gucci dress worn by Dakota Johnson. This gown is a dress makers dress, it is beautifully constructed and has a lovely vintage 1940's Hollywood style. My problem with this look is the styling , the necklace should go and her hair should be put up.While there many others that will get acclaim from other critic's these are my choices for honorable mention.
The Best Four Looks of the Oscars
In no particular order I have chosen four looks. I have also chose some great dresses that you can get to emulate these looks.
Nicole Kidman-Armani Prive
The first look I have chosen is the lovely Nicole Kidman wearing a gorgeous Armani Prive gown. What I love about this dress is the overall tone on Ms.Kidman , her hair, her skin and make-up all go together with the color of this gown. The body hugging silhouette and the all-over embroidery make this dress truly an amazing red carpet look. I have chosen four gowns that will help you recreate this red carpet favorite.
Hailee Steinfeld - Ralph & Russo
This is a gown that has something to say .This very adult Ralph & Russo creation straight from the Paris runways has landed in just the right place. Hailee Steinfeld wears this dress, where on a less confident actress the dress could have worn her.Since I've seen this gown on both best and worst dress lists, Imay need to defend why I love this gown. Most of all I love the airy feel of this gown , the lovely floral embellishments and the pure glamour . Inconclusion watch for this brand to become a favorite of the Hollywood set.
Karlie Kloss-Stella McCartney
Style is that elusive thing that sets one apart from the crowd. Hence if you want to see style just look to Karlie Kloss in this Stella McCartney dress.Simple , streamlined, and elegant this Stella McCartney dress is a favorite. It has all the elements that make for a beautiful look. As a result elegance and sophistication are paramount in this dress. This dress could be as effective in black , red or any solid because it's the cut and elegant simplicity that makes it so special.
Emma Stone-Givenchy Couture
Most noteworthy of the evening was Emma Stone in a gorgeous gold Givenchy couture design. Ms, Stone was stunning in her gold gown that emulated the Oscar trophy it self. The gold beaded and fringed gown was as near to perfect as you can get .
Oscar Night Fashion
In conclusion my dears the Oscars are a great dream to most of us .Hence the red carpet is a great fashion show . What I love about it unlike the runway shows you get to see these lovely women not all size 4 , not all 5'10'' and not all twenty-two wearing great clothes that you can see yourself in. You may shop the looks I've posted or follow the links to shop for others looks at Farfetch, Saks Fifth Avenue or Bloomingdales.
Ciao for now my dears Jandrew
