RETRO FLORALS FOR SUMMER 2018

Together with retro florals , flowers are blooming everywhere in fashion . Therefore if you call it retro or vintage these bold garish prints ” are coming up roses”.  What we  see is not the delicate flowery prints of past seasons but prints that are large scale and brilliant.

Where inspiration comes from is an argument unto it’s self. But that it seems inspired is for us to decipher. Moreover these retro florals are  lifted  from Grandma’s sofa cushions and the curtains of a sixties or seventies living room . While you may not recall the 60’s or 70’s I’m sure you’ve seen those Mary Tyler Moore or Brady Bunch reruns. The designers are also tuned in to this vintage loving craze .  Compared to recent seasons of pastel posies and abstract and hyper-modern flower patterns , this vibrant vintage-inspired look,  actually feels new.

RETRO FLORALS ON THE RUNWAY 

First I give accolades to the brilliant Dolce and Gabbana for giving us huge roses on dark backgrounds combined with spinning swirls of geometric print. Since those of you who are regular readers you know how I love Dolce and Gabbana. Second darling’s Alessandro Michele added these retro florals into the midst of his eccentric over the top land of Gucci. Whether you have a visa or not this throwback trend is perfected by Michele’s maximalist aesthetic .

Furthermore transpose your mind to the world of 60’s and 70’s curtains , table clothes, and wallpapers. The most compelling evidence of these retro florals we see in the collections of  Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu , and Thom Browne. Moreover  these houses and others embrace the retro floral trend for summer this season.

HOW TO WEAR RETRO FLORALS 

When it comes to picking a print, the key is to embrace the retro sentimentality, no matter how big, garish or curtain-like the print. In fact, enjoy the difference, it’s a good thing to have a knee-jerk reaction to a retro flower pattern.  Although many might encourage wearing this trend for effect , always find something you relate to. Therefore maybe you choose one floral piece and wear it with a neutral . On the other hand a huge trend this spring/summer is mixing patterns and prints together . If done well this is a fabulous look. Certainly you could go all out Gucci and mix prints ,florals and different accessories . The latter is my personal favorite and an eclectic eccentric look that reflects your personal relationship to this trend .

Darlings the bold retro florals for this summer are both fun and daring. When I use a word like daring to describe FASHION  it gives me a thrill. In fact those who dare to take on new fashion looks are exciting. Why can’t fashion be beautiful and challenging and daring . When we move out of our comfort zone we sometimes discover new things.
