JACQUEMUS CREATES AN AMAZING BIG VISION OF FRENCH STYLE

JACQUEMUS ; I LOVE FRENCH STYLE

Jacquemus is French. In the first place the blanket statement that I love French style is probably not true. But the french have a lot of style I do love. For example I adore Bridget Bardot , now this girl had french style , she was simple , elegant and sexy. Before her ascension to sex symbol status , she strayed toward simple dresses. Of course one of the elements of french style that I do love is simplicity. She fashioned simple clothing, worn with little jewellery and no gloves, choosing breezy cotton over heavy silk.

However I’m usually into things that are more ornate. Although this is true , an exception is given to the French. With this in mind  I think of the master designer Hubert de Givenchy . Notably the Givenchy style was an alliance of elegance ,pure lines and sophistication. Moreover his greatest contribution was the little black dress he created for his muse Audrey Hepburn. ( Breakfast at Tiffanys). Truly what I love about Givenchy was his sophisticated elegance and pure lines.

Therefore when asked to describe french style I really don’t hesitate, it is simple, elegant, has pure lines and is sophisticated.  Tres chic. With this in mind I think what designer has these traits of French chic today. To that end the label that comes to my mind is Jacqemus. This rising french brand is making waves in the Parisian fashion arena. Hence this modern version of French style is designed by Simone Porte Jacquemus. He creates fashion that brings a modern feeling to traditional French style.

Modern Parisian Style | Jacquemus          WHO IS SIMONE PORTE JACQUEMUS

Simon Porte Jacquemus started his own label when he was 19. Credited with bringing a freshness to Paris’ fashion scene, his collections are deconstructed, surrealist and often ‘NSFW’.

Jacquemus takes archetypal French concepts like the Breton stripe and spins them on their head, working in the space between commercial and conceptual. He cites the Japanese brand Comme des Garçons as one of his referential points, and was invited by the Maison Méditerranéenne des Métiers de la Mode in 2017 to stage a catwalk in his native Marseille.

Jacquemus moved to Paris when he was 18. In 2009, one year after the passing of his mother he launched his label under her maiden name, Jacquemus. He began working at the Comme des Garçons store in 2011 to finance his business, after gaining the support of Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe .

His collections have a child-like spirit and sense of freedom, often featuring asymmetrical designs, oversized ‘stiff’ silhouettes, experimental make up and shoeless or topless models. The up and coming designer now has his own studio off the Place des Vosges in Le Marais.

Jacquemus has a strong social media presence, helped by playful presentation of his images on Instagram. In this vein he published a photography book in tandem with the Spring/Summer 2014 collection – ‘La Grande Motte’ – a reference to the Languedoc-Roussilon’s seaside resort and his experiences there as a child.

His playful approach to pushing the boundaries of French fashion has earned him a finalist spot and a special prize at the LVMH Prize in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

 JACQUEMUSE S/S 2018

My darlings Simone Porte Jaqcemus is an independent self taught designer. While I studied costume design and learned design aesthetic, he had no formal design education. With this in mind I am awed by his talent and his vision . Moreover I really love his spring / summer collection 2018.

First this collection and his line are dedicated to his mother. In fact Jaqcemus is his mothers name. Certainly it is compelling when you hear the designers mother passed away when he was a young age. It has affected the course of his life. Like so many successful people whose early lives are marked by the death of a parent, it  gives him a special vision. He has a vivid nostalgia for his idyllic childhood. The sea, the sun, the folk tradition, the entire cinematic, sexy, mythology of the South of France.

 JAQCEMUS THE CLOTHES

Whenever I look at Jaqcemus especially in this collection I am aware of his influences . Therefore I  can see his childhood visions of his beautiful mother walking the beach in Marseilles. Porte Jacquemus is totally at home designing for the sort of climate where women make a lot out of not wearing very much.

In fact his soft, draped asymmetric shapes, draw visions of the south of France. In particular these shapes are swathed into tulip skirts or side-knotted into sarongs. Plunging tops are attached to his models’ bodies with schemes of tiny, skinny straps. Even so, despite the plunging necklines, thigh-split skirts, and exposed backs, they are characteristically Jacquemus. This time he said he is going away from the stiff fabrics, to work on the flow of draping. Porte Jacquemus is also  thinking about “French Island girls—they could be in Corsica, or Martinique in the Caribbean, too.”

In my opinion this collection has all the elements that I love in French style. As shown above Jacquemus  is simple, elegant and sexy like the ease of Bridget Bardot. With this in mind we also see the sophistication and simple pure lines of the Hepburn and Givenchy collaboration. See below these amazing creations. JACQUEMUS IN CONCLUSION

First thing to remember is French style is a thing. However you look at it, the French have a great sense of style. Therefore Jacquemus is not alone in showing this style to the word .Hence Isabel Marant and Claude Pierlot as well as many more show us the elegance of French style.
