SEE HOW THE AMAZING COSTUMES EMPOWER ZELLWEGER
Certainly, I have written about costumes here before, and the costumes in JUDY are worthy of my attention. Renée Zellweger plays screen icon Judy Garland in Judy. The biopic focuses on the middle-aged singer’s tumultuous time in 1960’s London. Furthermore, Judy tells the tragic tale of a woman broke and broken who accepts a gig at the club The Talk of the Town in hope of catharsis.
I saw the film Judy, on it’s opening weekend. Because of the impact this legendary performer has as a gay icon I was excited to see the film. In fact, I am far to young to have caught Judy’s direct impact on the gay world , however her legend lives on. Therefore, I know as fact somewhere around the globe at this very moment a drag queen channels Ms Garland.
However, great some of these drag impersonators might be, non of them can come close to Renée Zellweger. Certainly, Ms Zellweger had assistance in creating this Oscar worthy performance. In fact, the costume designer Jany Temime helped empower Zeelweger by creating a wardrobe equal to her performance. Temine also gave us a fabulous look into 1960’s London and the street and stage persona’s of Judy Garland.
JUDY; THE COSTUMES
Since, I am costume designer, I am always drawn to films where the costumes stand out. What stands out in the film Judy is the accurate recreation of the late 1960’s. Moreover, what good costumes should do is support the actor in creating their role. In fact in Judy the costumes are a huge element in Zeelwegers ability to bring the legendary vocalist to life. From the opening scene to the closing credits the costumes, are one of the keys to the success of this film.
Costume designer Jany Temine, has been interviewed in several articles and gives great insight into how she designed the looks for the film. The best of these interviews appears in CR.Fashion Book giving tremendous detail of her process in designing the wardrobe.
French costume designer Jany Temime divided the looks into “two Judys,” she says. “She was always dressed casually for ‘mom time,’ and on the stage, she was flashy, showy and very couture. You could feel from an early age she was always dressed by very good designers” (which included Hollywood’s Adrian, Jean Louis and Ray Aghayan). When Garland met her much younger fifth husband, Mickey Deans, the designer says, “She started dressing like an English teenager and got into Carnaby Street.” This prompted one of the film’s more memorable outfits, a powder blue wedding look. “I was told she designed the original herself,” says Temime. “It is full of feathers!” – CR.Fashion Book

MY INTERPRETATIONS OF THE COSTUMES
What I would like to do here is look at these fabulous costumes and see how they can influence the woman of today. While, most of you don’t have need for stage costumes, many of you are always looking for something unique to wear. Therefore let me guide you through the costumes and how to wear similar looks today.
Of all the decades in the 20th Century none has had more influence since it’s time than the 1960’s . Therefore the costumes in Judy are an excellent example of the clothes of the late 1960’s Moreover they are historically accurate to the garments that Judy Garland wore at the time , although they have been interpreted by the costume designer. Certainly, the film is much more than the costumes, however let me show how you attain similar fabulous looks.

THE EVENING SUIT
The first scenes of the film Judy shows an exasperated Ms Garland, trying to sort out her hotel suite. Certainly, this scene sets this tragic story in motion. The first vision on the screen of Renee Zellweger is shocking, because she has been transformed into Judy. While the make-up and hair are critical , so is the costume . In fact Jany Temime choose the perfect outfit to open the film. In Fact, this first appearance of Judy shows her wearing her signature look. Having researched Judy Garland photo’s it is evident she wore sequined, brocade or lame pant suits throughout this period.
This first costume is one of my personal favorites. Moreover , this style of evening suit Judy wore on and off stage has become a classic. Since my objective is to give you inspiration for finding outfits that are unique, this look is a great addition to a chic wardrobe.

THE BRIGHT BOLD PATTERNED DRESS
Certainly, I have never shied from promoting bold patterns, a previous post; 2O BRIGHT BOLD RETRO FLORALS, , shows the patterns of the 1960’s. In this case, I am excited by how the costumes in Judy, reflect the 1960’s and also Judy’s own love of bright bold patterns. In my previous post SPOTLIGHT ON GUCCI; HOW TO DRESS WITH DRAMA , I talked about the maximalist elements of Gucci which is evident here in these bold patterns. Moreover, the bright bold colors are a main focus of the designers of the 1960’s .
In addition, bright bold patterns are a great way to standout and express your own style. In fact I often use bold patterns as a way to draw attention and this device is used by designers to emphasis certain looks. Furthermore, bright bold patterns give an air of optimism and were everywhere at New York Fashion Week S/S 2020. Therefore, I am not only looking back and paying homage to the great designs of the 1960’s but looking forward to the use of bright bold colors in the coming seasons.

FEATHERS ARE GLAMOROUS
Whether, you like this blue dress or not , it plays into the glamour of the 1960’s. Judy Garland designed the original dress herself. Certainly, what stands out is the feathers on this dress, which were a big part of style in the 1960’s. While a lot of my personal association with feathers involves drag queens and mirror balls, feathers are a costume staple. In the past few years feathers have indeed made a huge fashion comeback. Therefore darling’s along the lines of Judy’s feathered wedding outfit , I have some some fabulous plumage that you can wear.

CHANGING COSTUMES TO CLOTHES AND VICE VERSA
Since the film Judy is a bio pick the costumes in the film are taken from real clothes. However at the same time the clothes become costumes. Therefore, the question might be is there a difference between clothes and costumes ? Certainly, there is a difference between clothes and costumes , although when you dress with drama clothes and costumes are close. What I love about this question is that there is no real answer. I encourage everyone to dress with drama, conviction and personal style. Much like the costumes in this film they are the personal style of Judy Garland.
Fashion Icons exist because they inspire us. Judy Garland in many ways is a fashion icon, I encourage you to take inspiration from the film and from this post.
