The theme for the Met Gala 2022 is Gilded Glamour. I am a huge fan of glamour and finding it may not always be easy. Seeking an injection of glamour and beauty I watched live the red(beige) carpet of the Met Gala 2022, here’s my take !
THE MET GALA 2022
a brief history
The Met Gala 2022 returned to the first Monday in May after several years of interruption. Last year the gala was in September, and the two previous years, canceled due to the pandemic. The Met Gala was first staged in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a fundraiser for the newly founded Costume Institute. It was a standard fundraiser connected to the Costume Institutes annual exhibit. Under the tenure of the great fashion editor Diana Vreeland, the Met Gala became a star-studded event with a theme. Vreeland drew on her legendary theatrics to catapult the event into an occasion with immense publicity and press coverage. With the addition of socialite Pat Buckley in 1978, the Met Gala rose to its honored position as one of the biggest and most exclusive social and charitable events of the season. Diana Vreeland orchestrated the event until her death in 1989.
Anna Wintour took over the Met Gala in 1995. Now under the watchful eye of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the Met Gala has become the massive media spectacular we see today. Ms. Wintour personally oversees the 700-person guest list, orchestrates what guests will wear, which designers will be represented and the theme. With ticket prices of $30,000, the event raises millions of dollars annually for The Costume Institute.
THE MET GALA 2022
GILDED GLAMOUR
The Met Gala 2022 had the theme of Gilded Glamour. So what exactly does Gilded Glamour refer? Well, you’ve come to the right place for the answer. The last quarter of the 19th century saw some of the largest changes in America’s history. The Gilded Age is a period starting in 1870 and going through to 1900. This was a time of explosive economic and industrial growth. The rise of economic fortunes of families like the Vanderbilts and the Carnegies led to an age that celebrated excess and luxury. These newfound fortunes created a society centered in New York where the sky scrappers rose so did the excessive culture of glamour and lavishness.
For the upper echelons, opulence was all the rage. The styles of the time were all about excess and glamour. The Gilded Age was a time of exuberant style. The new industrial age brought about new fabrics and manufacturing. Clothing became grandiose and opulent. Bustles and fabrics such as lace, silk, and velvet were combined to make extravagant gowns. Plumes and ostrich feathers added to hats and clothes added to their over-the-top looks. All of this was adorned with excessive textures of bows, frills, and ruffles.

GILDED GLAMOUR
The brief that went out for the Met Gala 2022 was to dress in your interpretation of The Gilded Age. Gilded Glamour went out with the instructions to wear white-tie attire, which included floor-length gowns, black pants, matching jackets, or coats with tails that hit the back of the knee.
Here are my choices of who did it best …

Kasey Muscraves wore a black dress with flourishes of sequin. This Prada gown is a great example of a late 19th century silhouette.

One of my favorite fashionistas Blake Lively stole the show with a stunning interpretation of Gilded Glamour. The seafoam and peach gown inspired by NY architecture was a custom Versace creation.

One of fashions true stars Sarah Jessica Parker showed how a dress can be set off by an extraordinary hat. This hat is the epitome of the Gilded age. The gown was inspired by a gown designed by the first black White house dressmaker Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley ( dress designer to Mary Todd Lincoln). The ball gown was a creation by Christopher John Rogers, a young black designer making heads turn in the New York fashion scene.

Hugh Jackman cut a fine figure in a beautifully cut white tie and tails.

Alicia Keyes wore a stunning gown by Ralph Lauren that shone with the New York skyline and payed homage to the city that was the home to the Gilded age.
Cardi B wore a gilded gown by Versace. While the Gilded age may refer to a era, this stunning gown payed homage to the era and the gold which made the era possible. The custom made gown used a mile of gold chain in a hand craft process that took 20 members of the atelier 1300 hours to complete.

Plus sized model Paloma Elsesser stunned in a Coach gown that played with idea of the Gilded Glamour corseted looks. This gown has the undergarments on the outside and has a silhouette that shows the models curves.
THE MET GALA 2022
INCONCLUSION
The Met Gala 2022, with its Gilded Glamour theme fell a little short of the fashion spectacular I had hoped to see. As usual, most of the attendees were far from the assigned motif. However, it was fun to see the fashion, cultural, and entertainment worlds strut their stuff. Fewer Kardashians would have suited me, but overall, it was a great night.
