MOTHER’S DAY 2018

Mother’s Day 2018 falls on May 13th which is less than 2 weeks away. While this year marks 20 years that I lost my most beloved mother , I still think of her everyday. Since Mothers Day is the one day set aside to honor your mother think of a special gift and event to show your love . Although Mother’s Day 2018 is a special anniversary for me , it is bittersweet. Therefore for those of us who have lost our mothers , it is a time to remember and reflect.

However let’s make this a happier post. While we all love our Fathers , Mothers Day beats it by far . There is more money spent on Mother’s Day gifts and meals out than Fathers day by 35%.

MOTHER’S DAY 2018 ;WHY WE SPEND MORE ON MOM

But while the amount of money we all spend on Father’s Day continues to go up every year, it still trails far behind Mother’s Day.

Dr Lars Perner, a consumer psychologist at the University of Southern California, says that most of us simply think our mothers deserve better or bigger presents.

“To some extent, wrong or right, mothers are often considered to be the biggest contributor to the home life.

“People tend to understand the sacrifices they make, that’s what you see. Moms have a special place in people’s hearts – there’s a special idea of what they offer the family.”

Dr Perner adds that perhaps dads are also “less interested in tangible tokens of appreciation”.

“I think fathers think they don’t really need expensive, showy trinkets, or anything like mom’s bouquet of flowers.” he says. “They’re not typically gift oriented. They generally don’t expect anyone to feel an obligation to buy material items for them.”

MOTHER’S DAY ; GIFT TIPS

While I just wanted to add some facts about Mother’s Day . Although all we know now is that Mother’s Day costs money. Therefore I’ve put some tips on Mother’s Day gifts that won’t break the bank.

Tip 1. If you have siblings this is the perfect time to coordinate . Therefore be the leader and contact them with a gift idea. Experiences always make wonderful gifts . Maybe mom likes a local spa , tickets to a play or concert , or maybe a gourmet cooking class. * hint; often Groupon has specials on classes ect.

Tip 2. Certainly flowers are always a nice thoughtful gift for Mother’s Day. Especially if you live in a different city or even country. But flowers will last maybe a week and all that is left is a picture on an i phone . Therefore check out a local garden center for a lovely hanging basket or potted plant. *hint; even if you are ordering for a delivery check out florists or garden centers in mom’s area, often local merchants will offer more bang for your buck . (avoid middleman agents.

Tip 3. Since taking mom out for dinner may seem a little cliche’ , maybe try and find a different restaurant . Perhaps a funky place mom would never go , or a food that she may not have tried , Sushi , Thai or Indian. * hint; make sure to invite all the family , your dead beat brother too. Don’t be accused of kidnapping mom.

Tip 4. Furthermore the budget you have for Mother’s Day is unique to everyone, however if you set a budget ahead of time you won’t run into problems . * hint; If you have in-laws make sure you don’t spend more on your mom that is spent on your partner’s mom. Unless otherwise negotiated. Avoid the headache !

MOTHER’S DAY 2018 GIFTS – WALLET

Specifically I remember being in grade two and making a flower vase for Mother’s Day. Most noteworthy was this craft included macaroni a personal favorite, however in this case it was glued to a large apple juice tin and sprayed gold. All of a sudden this tin can was the most beautiful thing in the world . Thanks mom I still remember my pride , somehow she made this a gift to me. I also recall years later buying my mom a beautiful wallet , something she never would have bought herself . Because the wallet was great quality my mum used it for years.

My Mother was an immigrant from England. In fact as a child I was fascinated about hearing her stories about her childhood . At the same time we visited England and I saw it for myself . Certainly it made a huge impact and I have visited many times since. English women wear scarves a lot . Furthermore, I being the gay son ,I was my Mum’s fashion stylist ; in other words I went shopping with Mum on Saturdays (some of my most favorite times.). In fact I remember saving money to buy my Mum the most beautiful scarf from a luxury store , that she would never go to. Of course the best gifts for Mother’s Day are those special items your Mom would never buy herself.

MOTHER’S DAY 2018 GIFTS – HANDBAGS

When I was a kid my Mum’s purse was that mystical place that you could never go into. Being sort of like “The Secret Garden” . While occasionally it would produce a dollar or hard candy it was like a hidden treasure trove . Of course as I aged I noticed the beauty of handbags , I knew my Mum always liked nice things but seldom purchased them for herself. In fact she was always making sacrifices for the family. So being the ultimate mummies boy I decided way back, that I would always try to give my Mum a special gift . The first time I gave her a handbag I was thrilled by how happy she was. Therefore I decided then a beautiful handbag was an item Mum would love.

In conclusion darlings this wasn’t the easiest post to write and I would have liked to be published a little earlier. Since I would give anything to have to buy a Mother’s Day gift , I hope I have helped someone else. Therefore I’ve chosen some great items from my partners . I personally love the scarves, the Versace classic is back to celebrate the houses last 20 years. Of course the handbags are always popular for Mother’s Day .
