Gomez is a superstar , My darlings I say this and take a pause, I ask myself "Who is Selena Gomez?". Since I last checked this morning Selena Gomez was the number one person on instagram with 125 million followers. First and foremost how does a 25 year old singer / actress become this influential .

We live in odd times. For example a B grade reality star can become the first twitter president and 25 year old pop singers are the biggest influence in fashion.

WHO IS SELENA GOMEZ ?

First I knew Selena Gomez as the ex-girlfriend of Justin Bieber. However this is not all I instinctively know about her , I know she is a singer and an actress. Of course I know she is a huge celebrity and I also know that I see her everywhere. Be that as it may, who is she ? At this point it may surprise you that she is one of the biggest influences on culture and especially on fashion in the world.

SELENA GOMEZ HER CAREER

Gomez is true to her name and was born Selena Marie Gomez in rural Texas in 1992 . She got her start in show business on the Barney Show as a child . Selena is a beautiful girl which of course helps in television.  Gomez is best know for her portrayal of Alex Russo in the popular Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place.  She has also been the lead in movies like Ramona and Beezus, Monte Carlo, Spring Breakers, and The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving.

Selena also fronted the popular band Selena Gomez & The Scene.Two of the band’s albums — Kiss & Tell and A Year Without Rain — were gold certified. Selena broke out on her own in 2013 with Stars Dance. Behind singles “Come & Get It” and “Slow Down,” the album was also gold certified. In 2015, Gomez dropped the hit single “The Heart Wants What It Wants”. She gained major popularity with her huge 2016 album Revival, and launched a world tour. Selena suffers from lupus, and autoimmune disease, and announced that she would be suspending her tour to care for herself in August 2016; she entered rehab for several months. Selena executive produced the hit Netflix show 13 Reasons Why.

No doubt Ms Gomez has a successful career as an actress and singer , but I argue her largest career is as an influencer. In fact Selena has partnered with many brands . However the young star did not just happen upon these deals , Selena Gomez is the near perfect brand ambassador. For example the super star recently signed a rumored 10 million dollar deal with Coach, American luxury leather goods company. Similarly Gomez has penned similar deals in the past with Coca-Cola , and Louis Vuitton. As a matter of fact Ms. Gomez demands  astronomical fees  for product placements on her  instagram account.

Since many stars have massive fan bases what makes Gomez so successful? In the first place she has been able to stay relatively drama-free. Hence brand safety is always an important thing when you're looking at these types of  brand ambassador deals. Gomez and her support network have kept her clean from controversy and hugely prominent.

Gomez's sponsors have not always been top-drawer, in fact her Disney squeaky image once had a different impact. Be that as it may she endorsed everything from Sears and Borden Milk to Adidas .

To go from Sears to Coach took a little re-imaging, and a large piece of that had to do with her stylist Kate Young. Young made a push to put Gomez in high-fashion clothes, name-checking Valentino, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, and of-the-moment brand Monse .The intent seemed to balance her perpetual baby face with a classic adult aesthetic and grow her Disney Channel roots into her pop-star present.  It worked. She embraced the high-fashion community, and they embraced her—and her 125 million Instagram followers—right back.

Darlings in conclusion a fashion influencer is a relatively new idea. Many stars and fashion bloggers are fashion influencers. Since Selena Gomez has such an enormous following it only makes sense that brands would want to hitch themselves to her star. However these are mutually beneficial relationships. Therefore I'm excited to learn more and follow the most influential people in fashion. While I do hope that my contributions to this area, can also influence my readers , as I share my knowledge and love of fashion. Ciao for now darlings  Jandrew
