SPOTLIGHT ON THE TOM BOY FASHION OF BLANCHETT IN OCEAN’S 8

OCEAN’S 8

Cate Blanchett is one of the stars of the summer blockbuster Ocean’s 8. Whenever a huge blockbuster open’s it seem’s there is always a lot of hype. In this case I started to hear the hype in 2016 . Certainly this is because of the power house all female cast . In fact as well as Ms. Blanchett , Sandra Bullock plays the ring leader and she has put together a notable crew. Therefore we round out the group with Rhianna , Mindy Kaling , Awkwafina , Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway , and Sara Paulson. All things considered a gathering of Hollywood movers and shakers.

Since most of us are familiar with Ocean’s 11 the same premise is in place for Ocean’s 8.  However this film features our heroines pulling at heist at the annual Met Gala.

Hence the setting of the Met Gala tells me one thing darlings this is a fashion film. The polished fashion sense of the “Ocean’s” franchise is at the heart of Gary Ross’ opulently costumed “Ocean’s 8.”Costume designer Sarah Edwards infused each member of the star-studded cast with a distinct identity.  However the one that stood out to me was the character played by Cate Blanchett. She gives us perfect tomboy glamour .

CATE BLANCHETT IN OCEAN’S 8

The nightclub-owner Lou (Blanchett) echoes the previous films’ Rat Pack-like tailoring. Moreover we see the tomboy element with colorful custom Burberry suits. Also the  ’70s menswear served as an inspiration, enriched by leather, vintage pieces and layered accessories. Complementing Lou’s “obvious rock ’n’ roll past” is the shimmering green jumpsuit. In fact it’s tomboy charm that  takes her to the Met gala, in an archival Givenchy piece in the ’70s glam spirit.

Furthermore watching the film I am asking myself is Lou ( Cate Blanchett ) gay. Certainly her style might give you that idea, but let’s never jump to conclusions . While I’ve never been too much into stereotypes there are certain things that give us a tomboy vibe. However lot’s of women are tomboys who aren’t gay.

Blanchett’s wardrobe for the film includes a lot of different takes on suiting, a lot of leather, and a lot of metallic shoes. Moreover I’m pretty sure Blanchett’s character  wears approximately 45 different outfits over the course of the film. I’ve covered women’s suits for this S/S season and it’s a hot look, right on.

Therefore girls you don’t have to be gay to be a tomboy or to dress like one.

GREEN VELVET SUIT

OCEAN'S 8

This green velvet suit is a great look . Moreover this look is a cross between Keith Richards and Mick Jagger giving a fabulous early 70’s vibe. In fact this is a perfect look for work or play. By the same token you get the tomboy cool .

LEOPARD COAT

OCEAN'S 8

First thing to note is that every great ” femme fatale” has worn a leopard coat . Hence look no further than Mrs.Robinson, Jackie Kennedy  or  Kim Novak.  Since this look can inspire the ultra feminine it might be hard  to envision a tomboy version . However this straight cut coat has a traditional top coat feel.

BLACK TUX BLAZER

OCEAN'S 8

When looking for that cool vibe you need not look much further.  Here Cate Blanchett channels her inner tomboy to make this black tux style jacket and rocker scarf  look great. Furthermore the metalic boots are so on trend.

BOMBER JACKET AND LEATHER PANTS

OCEAN'S 8

Here these leather pants are a super look for that tomboy style. Moreover which one of you doesn’t find this look sexy and a little wild ! In addition this varsity bomber jacket is favorite . Of course again the costume designer shows us some fabulous metallic booties .

BLUE VELVET & RED LEATHER

Here we have a look that I just love the red leather pants and blue velvet jacket are hot . In fact this is  real rocker girl chic . Moreover the booties set this outfit into another realm . Since we are looking at tomboy looks this one is perfect , reminding me of Pat Benetar.

BABY BLUE SUIT

In my opinion this baby-blue suit is Ocean’s 8 style in a word. While every character in this film has their own style this is the epitome of Lou’s ( Blanchett’s) . Here we have a strong vintage vibe , taking us back to 70’s prom nights or wedding singers. However this suit look is so chic and on point for this summer’s fashion.

EVENING SUIT FOR A TOMBOY

When one wants to wear a great evening look but doesn’t do dresses there are several options . First you could go the easy way and wear a variation on a tuxedo. However if you want to be a little more creative anyone of these fabulous jackets will meet your objective. While some of these jackets have matching pants , choosing another option works well.

Darling’s it’s clear to me that I’m no film critic . Therefore like anyone else I have my own preferences. While somewhere in the recesses of my mind I remember seeing a couple of different Ocean’s 11 films. Be that as it may I think all these films have the same basic plot.

However with that in mind it was a fun frolic to see this talented cast work their magic.Furthermore I got exactly what I paid for, a heist film with great fashion . By and large I was entertained.

In fact I was impressed with the fabulous wardrobe and give accolades to the designer. Especially impressive was the wardrobe of Lou (Cate Blanchett) .  Moreover it’s a rare thing to see a tomboy dressed character in a mainstream movie .However maybe next time they’ll actually make her gay. Although we get a dose of lesbian energy we never really get kissing girls or girl on girl love.  In conclusion dears we’re not waving our pride flag but we got some great butchy tomboy looks .

Therefore darling’s shop my interpretations of the cool tomboy look’s, and have as much doing it as I did writing this post .
