THE CANADIAN TUXEDO: DENIM ON DENIM HITS NEW HEIGHTS

THE CANADIAN TUXEDOx

The Canadian Tuxedo is reaching new fashion heights. My dears listen closely when I say denim is the one fabric that will out last us all. Denim’s journey from workwear to high fashion is a testament to its versatility and enduring appeal. It’s a fabric that has been worn by everyone from cowboys to supermodels, adapting to each era’s style demands. Today, the Canadian Tuxedo is not just a fashion statement but a canvas for self-expression.

For my Canadian followers and especially my Vancouver fans here’s a story for you. The term Canadian Tuxedo originated In Vancouver in the 1950’s. It happened when crooner Bing Cosby was refused entrance into a fancy Vancouver hotel for wearing head to toe denim. While time marches on denim has become a fashion go to. Let’s explore how denim on denim the Canadian tuxedo once a fashion faux pas has become prominent on runways, streets and even red carpets.

THE CANADIAN TUXEDO; A BOLD FASHION STATEMENT

Denim, the fabric that has transcended time and trends, is making a bold statement in the fashion world once again. This time, it’s not just about a pair of jeans or a casual jacket; it’s about the Canadian Tuxedo. A term once used mockingly, the Canadian Tuxedo has been reclaimed and transformed into a symbol of effortless style and sophistication. As we embrace the top-to-toe denim trend, let’s delve into how to master this look with a nod to  designers and retailers who are redefining denim.

CANADIAN TUXEDO; MIX IT UP

One key to nailing the denim-on-denim look is in the mix. Pairing different shades and textures of denim can create a dynamic and visually exciting outfit. Start with a classic light-wash denim shirt and tuck it into dark indigo jeans. The contrast between light and dark elevates the ensemble, making it suitable for casual outings and more polished events. Denim comes in many different finishes; stone washed, vintage finish, and over-dyed are just a few. Black and white denim, while not traditionally denim, are paired together to make a different version of the Canadian tuxedo.

Start with bottoms select a great pair of jeans and then add a contrasting denim top to get your Canadian Tuxedo started. Whether you lean towards the mom jean, super wide leg or a more narrow fit select something that gives you the desired silhouette. Jeans are a wardrobe staple, heightening the look with a denim shirt and you’ve got a fashion forward look. I’ve worked with my partners to bring a selection of different jeans to start a look.

CANADIAN TUXEDO ; MATCHY- MATCHED

Indeed, you can go matchy-matched with a jacket and jeans in the same shade; this works great with a skirt and jacket in the same denim. Often, designers are a step ahead and produce sets that go together. I love the looks from Schiaparelli and Gabriela Hearst(see above), which are very different from each other but show how a matching look works well.

CANADIAN TUXEDO; LAYERING WORKS

Layering is essential when it comes to denim-on-denim. A fitted denim jacket over a loose shirt can create a structured silhouette. Alternatively, a denim vest can add an edgy twist to the outfit. The goal is to create depth and dimension without overwhelming the senses. Layering different denim shades, textures, and  patterns create visual interest. While many are saying tight legs are out they are making a huge comeback , try an oversize denim jacket or shirt .

Denim for All Seasons

The beauty of denim is its year-round appeal. In the warmer months, pair your Canadian Tuxedo with open-toed sandals and lightweight, breathable fabrics. As the temperature drops, layer with chunky knits and boots for a cozy yet chic look.
