CANNES FILM FESTIVAL ; A DIOR INSPIRATION ON THE RED CARPET.

72 nd CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Darling’s each May the film industry heads to the south of France for the Cannes Film Festival. This is not my first post on Cannes, however, this year I’ll take a different approach. In fact, 2019 is the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. The stars, the producers, the directors, and other film insiders descend on Cannes with the purpose of awarding each other for a job well done.

While we all have jobs, and tasks and duties it is rare that we will ever receive public accolades. Therefore, there is no standing ovations for teaching a class or waiting a table. However, my dears I question whether it is the awards that are the most important part of Cannes or any such event. Of course awards and appreciation of our art and lives is important, however, it is marketing opportunities that are most relevant. However cynical I may sound, I speak the truth. In the great words of Bette Midler ” It ain’t the ballads and it ain’t the rockers, it’s these pretty legs and these great big knockers, that’s what sells the tickets at the door.”

Therefore, with this in mind, I suggest that all awards shows, award events, and gala’s are in fact branding, marketing, and publicity events. Moreover it is the red carpet, that is the greatest advertising event of them all.

THE CANNES RED CARPET

The red carpet is a business, however, it is also all about fashion and there’s the catch. Us fashion lovers, love to look at red carpets. Our motivations may vary, maybe it’s to see who looks the best. However it’s much more likely to see who’s glad rags fall short or who looks ridiculous. The Met gala is a costume ball, the Oscar’s are very American and conservative, however Cannes is the where the elite pair with the greatest designers to give us the show we all long for. This year Cannes fulfilled the desires of us fashionista’s (fashionisto’s) with glamour and style. We all get an inspiration for dressing up, and if that’s not the point what is.

CANNES  INSPIRATION

Elle Fanning in Dior Haute Couture

In fact, the marketing and branding award was won by the house of Dior. Certainly you know I love fashion history therefore, this is one of my favorite looks of the Cannes Red Carpet. In fact Elle Fanning was fabulous in a Christian Dior Couture ensemble designed by Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. However, this is a recreation of the 1946 New Look designed by the master himself.

As a matter of fact, the House of Dior was established in 1946 and in December of that year Christian Dior launched his spring/summer collection. Hence, the fashion designers signature look of the wide, mid-length skirt, tightly-fitted button-up jacket and picture hat was revealed. While some considered the look as highly glamorous others were none to pleased with the design.

CANNES

Moreover, the “The New Look” received harsh criticism from designer Coco Chanel and others , they described his vision as uncomfortable and going backwards. However, here we are in 2019, some 72 years later being re-inspired by this incredible garment. Darlings, I am the first to agree no one look serves all, however, as an inspiration this Christian Dior look is near perfection.

The Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar, Carmel Snow, strongly believed in the couturier’s talent. At the end of the fashion show, having seen those unique silhouettes, those lengths, those volumes, those tiny waists and devilishly sexy busts, she exclaimed, “It’s quite a revolution, dear Christian! Your dresses have such a new look!”

Over six decades after its creation, the New Look revolution, and its spirit, continue to inspire. The New Look is in perpetual evolution.

So as an honor to the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, is this 72 year old fashion look, as fresh then as it is today.

Darling’s, if any of you are traveling to London this year, the Victoria & Albert Museum has an exhibit Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams.  The exhibit goes on till September, but you will need to inquire about tickets , as they are limited.

INSPIRATION

I think of all my fashion friends who may not wear this look , but I know will be inspired. That’s why people attend fashion show’s and red carpets, often they know they will never buy the clothes but they will be inspired. I keep pinterest boards of things that inspire me. Since most of my creations are now posts for this blog or articles for other ones, I often require inspiration. We are all creative beings and we all find inspiration in different places . I hope you found some inspiration here today.

WHAT’S HOT

With the great inspiration of the Dior’s “New Look” at Cannes, and my love of vintage looks, it’s these looks that are hot. Certainly it is the hat, the shoes, the bag, that dot the i’s and cross the t’s. In fact great accessories make the look complete, therefore WHAT’S HOT are those great fabulous accessories. Furthermore, I’ve found some great pieces and some great prices. So go full on Dior and give yourself a New Look.
